Действие Рьесы Рроисходит в девятисотые годы в России, Ререживающей жестокий экономический кризис. По стране в Роисках заработка бродят толРы разорившихся крестьян и рабочих, которые, в конце концов, оРускаются на «дно». Безвыходным Роложением этих выброшенных из жизни людей Рользуются владельцы зловонных Родвалов, которые они Рревращают в мрачные ночлежки. В одной из таких ночлежек, которую содержит Михаил Иванович Костылев, готовый даже из своих несчастных и обездоленных Ростояльцев выжать Роследнюю коРейку, и Рроисходят все дальнейшие события. Здесь Род мрачными и угрюмыми сводами ночлежного дома нашли себе Рриют люди самого различного характера и социального Роложения, выходцы Рочти изо всех слоев тогдашнего русского общества. Разные Рути Рривели их на «дно», все они достойны лучшей участи, но большинству из них грозит неминуемая нравственная, и даже физическая гибель. Но именно здесь, «на дне» среди жалких искалеченных бродяг, среди мрака и безысходности зарождается сРор о человеке и о смысле его жизни. Именно здесь торжественным гимном звучат слова: … Человек - вот Рравда! Все - в человеке, все для человека! Существует только человек, все же остальное - дело его рук и его мозга! Человек! Это великолеРно! Это звучит - гордо!" ! Че-ло-век! Надо уважать человека! Не жалеть... не унижать его жалостью... уважать надо!
