أول عاصمة في تاريخ الإسلام، وثاني أقدس الأماكن لدى المسلمين بعد مكة. فيها أول مسجد بناه النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ويضم قبره الشريف، وهي عاصمة منطقة المدينة المنورة الواقعة على أرض الحجاز التاريخية غرب المملكة العربية السعودية.

يرجع تأسيس المدينة المنورة -التي عرفت قديما بـ"يثرب"- إلى حوالي 1600 سنة قبل الهجرة النبوية، وقد تعاقب السكان عليها منذ إنشائها، فقد سكنها العماليق، ومن بعدهم قبائل المعينيون من اليمن، ومن ثم اليهود الذين وصلوا إليها أول مرة خلال القرن الثاني الميلادي.

وتتميز بالمناخ الصحراوي الذي يتسم بالجفاف وقلة سقوط الأمطار، ودرجات حرارة عالية تتراوح بين 30 و45 درجة مئوية في فصل الصيف، أما في فصل الشتاء فيكون الجو ممطرا، ويكثر هطول المطر في شهر أبريل/نيسان مع إمكانية هطوله في شهور الشتاء.
