يسعى الإنسانِ بصورة فطريَّة إلى تحصيل المكاسب والأرباح من خلال تحقيق طموحات وأهداف متغيرة ومتنامية، تتغير بتغير مراحله العمريَّة، وحاجاته الفطرية، والفكرية، والاجتماعية، ويبني الإنسان الناجحُ أهدافه تبعاً لما تمتلكهُ شخصيَّته من مهاراتٍ، وسلوكاتٍ، ومواهب، ومعارف، وقد لا تتناسب طموحاتُ الفردِ وأهدافه مع محدِّداته الذاتيَّةِ أو قد لا تنسجمُ معها، فيتحتَّم عليه في تلك الحالةِ أن يواجه أحد الاحتمالين: إمَّا أن يتراجع عن أهدافه وينسحب ليعلن هزيمته وفشله في تحقيق طموحاته ورسم المستقبل كما أُريد له أن يكون، أو أن يشحذ همته ويستدعي طاقته في سبيل تحقيق أحلامه وإدراك نجاحاته، وفي هذه الحالة يتعين عليه التعرّف إلى جوانب طاقته، ومهاراته، وتطويرها بما يتلاءم مع المستوى الذي يطمح أن يصل إليه.
إنَّ اجتهاد الفرد، واستعداده ورغبته في تغيير نفسه، ودعم قدراته، وتلبية متطلبات الظروف العملية والمعيشية هو ما يُطلق عليه تطوير الذات وبناء الشخصية.
