روش کاری وی
تفسیر مجمع البیان یکی از بهترین کتابهای تفسیری است که با اسلوب و ترتیب ویژه‌ای نوشته شده، مولف در هر باب، اقوال را بدون اینکه مورد رد و اعتراض قرار دهد، نقل می‌کند و انتخاب یک قول را به عهده فکر و ذهن خواننده می‌گذارد.
به بیان دیگر روش او در مجمع البيان اين است كه ابتدا دسته ای مختلف از آن گروه آيات را بررسي و حلاجي مي كند. ابتدا از نظر قرائت و اختلاف قرائت و قضاوت در بين قرائت هاي مختلف، سپس از نظر لغت و مشكلات لغوي، سپس از نظر اعراب، سپس از نظر اسباب النزول، سپس معناي مبسوط و مفتح آن گروه آيات را به دست مي دهد، و سرانجام تحت عنوان ” نظم”، ربط و پيوند معنايي آيات را به همديگر و نيز ربط هر گروه آيات را به گروه قبلي و نيز و بعدي و نيز ربط سوره ها را با يكديگر باز مي نماياند.

فنون تفسیری از نظر ایشان
ایشان در مقدمه تفسیرش هفت فن را برای شناسایی قرآن لازم می‌دانند که به این ترتیب می‌باشد:
دانستن تعداد آیات قرآنی و فایده شناخت آنها
اسامی قراء مشهور در شهرها و علت مشهوریت و مقبولیت قرائت آنها
آشنایی با معنای تفسیر و تاویل
اسامی قرآن و معانی آنها
بیان مختصری از علوم قرآنی مانند ناسخ و منسوخ
اخبار و فضیلت قرآن و در ذکر آنچه بر خواننده مستحب است.
امتیازات مجمع البیان
مولف کتاب از دانشمندانی است که از علوم مختلف آگاهی دارد و دهها تالیف از خود بیادگار گذاشته اما عمده کوشش وی در راه تفسیر صرف شده است. علامه امینی در شهداء الفضیله می نویسد:( تفسیر وی به مجمع البیان به تنهائی کافیست که دریای فضل و تبحر علمی او را بنمایاند تفسیری که نور حقیقت می‌بارد و پرتو دانش و بینش وحی الهی می‌تابد کتابی که هیچ کس از آن بی نیاز نتواند بود.) در واقع تفسیر مجمع البیان دائرة المعارف مرتبی است که تمام فنون قرآن را در خود جمع کرده و علاوه بر آن دارای امتیاز دیگری است و آن اینکه در تفسیر آیات قرآنی علاوه بر روایات از اهلیت پیامبر ، از روایات مذاهب مختلف اسلامی اهل تسنن نیز نقل نموده که این از خصوصیات منحصر بفرد این کتاب تفسیری می‌باشد.

شایان ذکر است که در تفاسیر قبل از مجمع‌البیان، روایات و اقوال در تفاسیر مختلف به طور نامنظم ضبط می‌گردیده به طوری که گاهی فنی با فن دیگر در می‌آمیخت و خواننده به سختی می‌توانست مطلبی را که می‌خواست به دست آورد حتی در پاره‌ای از موارد به طور خسته کننده‌ای تفضیل داده می‌شد و یا برعکس در پاره‌ای از موارد مطالب به حدی مختصر می‌بود که مقصود خواننده از آن مطلب حاصل نمی‌گشت اما در میان مفسرین کمتر کسی بود که به این مهم توجه کند و به خواننده القا کند که در جو قرآن قرار گیرد، که تفسیر مجمع‌البیان یکی از آنهاست که توانسته در میان کتب تفسیری با بحثهای فراوان و عمیقی که دارد دارای نظمی بی نظیر باشد، مطالبش دسته بندی شده وخواص تفسیر را از دست ندهد و توجه داشته باشد که تفسیر فنی است در خدمت قرآن نه در خدمت لغت و فقها و نه در تطبیق با علم نحو و دیگر اینکه همانگونه که یادآور شدیم نویسنده مجمع‌البیان تا حد زیادی توانسته اخلاص عملی خود را در برابر عاطفه مذهبی خودش حفظ کند ایشان هرگز در هماهنگی با عواطف خود ، در حمله به مخالفین مذهبش راه افراط را نمی‌پیماید.
