" رجلان في عِراك دامٍ، يوشك أحدهما بأن يجهَز على الآخر بضربة هراوة. أحدهما سيقتل في النهاية، يظهر ذلك من شراستهما، والعصف الكامن في جسديهما المندفعين والمتوثِّبين، ثم ليس هناك مَن يفضّ الخصام الضاري بينهما. هراوتان في الهواء تأخذان نفساً عميقاً وقاتلاً من الجاذبية لتهويان بقوة وحسم. هناك جلالٌ ما في هذا العراك الخرافي. بعد حين سيسفح دم، وسيخرّ جسد إلى الأرض، لكن ماذا سيفعل المنتصر بنصره؟ فالأرض من حولهما هضاب جرداء، متفحِّمة، وغاضبة، وأرجلهما تغوص تدريجياً في الرمال.

يتعاركان وهما لا يدركان بأنّ العدو الحقيقي يتمثَّل في الرمل الذي يستدرجهما إلى حتفها. أيّ عمى أصابهما؟ ألا يحتاج أحدهما إلى الآخر في هذه الأرض الجحيمية التي تتَّسع بفداحة لهما ولسلالتهما من بعدهما؟! في حمى الهجوم المتبادَل بينهما، والعاطفة العنيفة التي تزيِّن لأحدهما فكرة أنّ العالم سيكون أفضل من دون أحدهما، وفي اللحظة التي كان فيها كل شيء ممكناً: يقتل أحدهما، يُقتلان معاً، يخرّان جريحين نازفين بدون إمكانية إسعاف.

كان هناك شيء واحد يقف رابط الجأش بينهما محترساً من إشراقة تعقُّل تنبثق بداخلهما فيتوقفان: إنها الجريمة في كمال وحشيتها وقداستها منذ أن دفع رُهاب المزاحمة قابيل لقتل أخيه هابيل. في خلفية لوحة غويا: "عراك بالهراوات" تتجمّع نذر عاصفة، ستقتلع كلّ شيء من جذوره وتطوح به بعيداً. ما أغبى الإنسان! ما أغبى الانسان".

يروي الكاتب المغربي "عبد الكريم جويطي" في هذه الرواية حكاية "محمد الغافقي"، بطلها وشخصيتها المحورية، لترصد علاقة الأخير بجده الباشا، وشقيقه العسكري، وإصابته بالعمى، وتعلقه بخادمة الجيران، ثم قصة السمسار الذي غدر به وخانه بأخذ زوجته منه. وفي خضم الحكاية الرئيسية، تدور حكايات تتداخل بحكاية البطل "محمد الغافقي"، الضرير، ومنها حكاية جده الباشا، وحكاية مقبرة الجماجم، وحكايات أخرى لها وظائفها ومضامينها وامتداداتها وتشابك خيوطها الاجتماعية والسياسية
