سبب التسمية :
سميت ‏سورة ‏الكهف ‏لما ‏فيها ‏من ‏المعجزة ‏الربانية ‏في ‏تلك ‏القصة ‏العجيبة ‏الغريبة ‏قصة ‏أصحاب ‏الكهف‎ .‎‏

سميت ‏سورة ‏الكهف ‏لتناولها ‏قصة ‏أصحاب ‏الكهف.
عظمت الفتنة على أهل الإِيمان، فلما رأى الفتية ذلك حزنوا حزناً شديداً وبلغ خبرهم الملك الجبار فبعث في طلبهم فلما مثلوا عند الملك توعدهم بالقتل إن لم يعبدوا الأوثان ويذبحوا للطواغيت، فوقفوا في وجهه وأظهروا إيمانهم وقالوا {ربُّنَا رَبُّ السَّمَأوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ لَنْ نَدْعُوَ مِنْ دُونِهِ إِلَهًا} فقال لهم: إنكم فتيان حديثة أسنانكم وقد أخّرتكم إلى الغد لتروا رأيكم، فهربوا ليلا ومرّوا براع معه كلب فتبعهم فلما كان الصباح آووا إلى الكهف وتبعهم الملك وجنده فلما وصلوا إلى الكهف هاب الرجال وفزعوا من الدخول عليهم، وألقى الله على أهل الكهف النوم فبقوا نائمين وهم لا يدرون ثلاث مئة وتسع سنين ثم أيقظهم الله وظنوا أنهم أقاموا يوماً أو بعض يوم، وشعروا بالجوع فبعثوا أحدهم ليشتري لهم طعاماً وطلبوا منه التخفي والحذر فسار حتى وصل البلدة فوجد معالمها قد تغيرت ولم يعرف أحداً من أهلها فقال في نفسه: لعلي أخطأت الطريق إلى البلدة ثم اشترى طعاماً ولما دفع النقود للبائع جعل يقلبها في يده، ويقول: من أين حصلت على هذه النقود؟ واجتمع الناس وأخذوا ينظرون لتلك النقود ويعجبون، ثم قالوا من أنت يا فتى لعلك وجدت كنزاً؟ فقال لا والله ما وجدت كنزاً إنها دراهم قومي، قالوا له إنها من عهد بعيد ومن زمن الملك دقيانوس، قال: وما فعل دقيانوس؟ قالوا مات من قرون عديدة، قال والله ما يصدقني أحد بما أقوله: لقد كنا فتيةً وأكرهنا الملك على عبادة الأوثان فهربنا منه عشية أمس فأوينا إلى الكهف فأرسلني أصحابي اليوم لأشتري لهم طعاماً، فانطلقوا معي إلى الكهف أريكم أصحابي، فتعجبوا من كلامه ورفعوا أمره إلى الملك - وكان مؤمناً صالحاً - فلما سمع خبره خرج الملك والجند وأهل البلدة وحين وصلوا إلى الغار سمعوا الأصوات وجلبَة الخيل فظنوا أنهم رسل دقيانوس فقاموا إلى الصلاة فدخل الملك عليهم فرآهم يصلون فلما انتهوا من صلاتهم عانقهم الملك وأخبرهم أنه رجل مؤمن وأن دقيانوس قد هلك من زمن بعيد وسمع كلامهم وقصتهم وعرف أن الله بعثهم ليكون أمرهم آية للناس ثم ألقى الله عليهم النوم وقبض أرواحهم فقال الناس: لنتخذن عليهم مسجداً
