انسان كه با الهام خدايى تقوا را از فجور و كار نيك را از كار زشت تميز مى دهد -،اگر بخواهد رستگار شود بايد باطن خود را تزكيه كند، و آن را با پرورشى صالح بپروراند و رشد دهد، با تقوا بيارايد، و از زشتى ها پاك كند، و گر نه از سعادت و رستگارى محروم مى ماند، هر قدر بيشتر آلوده اش كند، و كمتر بيارايد محروميتش بيشتر مى شود، و آنگاه به عنوان شاهد داستان ثمود را ذكر مى كند كه به جرم اينكه پيامبرشان حضرت صالح را تكذيب كرده ، ناقه اى را كه مأمور به حمايت از آن بودند بكشتند، به عذاب استيصال و انقراض مبتلا شدند، و با نقل اين داستان به اهل مكه تعريض و توبيخ مى كند، و سوره مورد بحث به شهادت زمينه اى كه دارد در مكه نازل شده.
