والذي عليه أكثر المفسرين أن ذا الكفل نبي من الأنبياء عليهم الصلاة والسلام أجمعين،
وذهب آخرون إلى أن ذا الكفل ليس بنبي، بل كان رجلاً صالحاً، وقد روي عن مجاهد في قوله سبحانه: {وذا الكفل}، قال: رجل صالح غير نبي، تكفل لنبي قومه أن يكفيه أمر قومه، ويقيمهم له، ويقضي بينهم بالعدل، ففعل ذلك، فسمي: ذا الكفل.
