ولدت إليف شافاق في ستراسبورغ، فرنسا، العام 1971. وقد حازت جوائز أدبية عدة، وتعد من أكثر الروائيات في تركيا قراءة. وقد أطلق عليها أحد النقاد أنها "واحدة من أكثر الأصوات تميّزاً في الأدب التركي والعالمي المعاصر". ترجمت أعمالها إلى أكثر من ثلاثين لغة، ومنحت وسام فارس التميّز الفخري للفنون والآداب.
أصدرت إليف شفق 11 كتاباً، منها ثماني روايات. وكتبت الرواية باللغتين التركية والإنكليزية، وهي تمزج التقاليد الغربية والشرقيى، وتحكي عن النساء والأقليات والمهاجرات، والثقافات الفرعية، والشباب والأرواح العالمية. وتستمد رواياتها من مختلف الثقافات والتقاليد الأدبية، كما أنها تظهر رغبى عميقة في التاريخ والفلسفة والتصوف، والثقافة الشفوية، والسياسات الثقافية. وتمتاز شفق أيضلً بعينها الثاقبة في الكوميديا السوداء. وكانت روايتها الثانية التي كتبتها باللغة الإنكليزية "لقيطة إسطنبول"، أكثر الروايات مبيعاً في العام 2006، ورشحت لنيل جائزة أورانج. ونتيجة لهذه الرواية التي تروي قصة أسرة أرمنية وأسرة تركية من خلال عيون النساء في هاتين الأسرتين، حكم على شفق بالسجن، لكن الحكم أسقط عنها. وتتناول رواية "قواعد العشق الأربعون" مواضيع العشق، والحب بين الشرق والغرب، والماضي والحاضر، والروحي والدنيوي، كل ذلك من خلال رواية قصة
