شغلت "لعبة مريم" متابعي وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي في السعودية وأثارت جدلاً كبيراً بينهم. وأظهر هؤلاء قلقهم من تأثير اللعبة التي تتطرق إلى أسئلة سياسية في مضمونها. وأشار هؤلاء إلى احتمال أن تكون اللعبة
وسيلة لاصطياد معلومات شخصية خاصة باللاعبين أو جوالاتهم وملفاتها.
وشبه مبرمجو تقنية في السعودية اللعبة بلعبة "الحوت الأزرق" التي انتشرت في فرنسا وروسيا في فترة سابقة وقيل إنها أدت إلى انتحار 150 مراهقاً.
ونقل موقع "العربية.نت" عن الخبير التقني ياسر الرحيلي قوله إن حقيقة اختراق اللعبة لجهاز الآيفون وعدم إمكانية حذف تطبيقها أمر "مبالغ فيه وغير صحيح".
يُذكر أن لعبة مريم تعتمد على البعد النفسي حيث تستخدم مؤثرات صوتية ومرئية تثير جواً من الرعب لدى مستخدمها.
وهي تقوم على وجود طفلة صغيرة اسمها مريم تضيع طريق منزلها وتطلب المساعدة من المستخدم لتعود إليه.
