وهو من أغنى المعاجم بالشواهد، وهو جيد الضبط ويعرض الروايات المتعارضة ويرجح الأقوال فيها. ويذكر المعجم ما اشتق من اللفظ من أسماء القبائل والأشخاص والأماكن وغيرها. ويعتبر هذا المعجم موسوعة لغوية وأدبية لغزارة مادته العلمية واستقصائه واستيعابه لجلّ مفردات اللغة العربية.
