รามเกียรติ์ เป็นวรรณคดีสำคัญเรื่องหนึ่งของไทย โดยมีต้นเค้าจากวรรณคดีอินเดีย คือมหากาพย์รามายณะที่ฤๅษีวาลมีกิ ชาวอินเดีย แต่งขึ้นเป็นภาษาสันสกฤต เมื่อประมาณ 2,400 ปีเศษ
เชื่อว่าน่าจะเป็นที่รู้จักในหมู่ชาวไทยมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ จากอิทธิพลของลัทธิพราหมณ์ฮินดู โดยแฝงไว้ซึ่งคติยกย่องพระมหากษัตริย์ ซึ่งเชื่อกันว่าเป็นอวตารของพระวิษณุ
สำหรับเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ ของไทยนั้น มีมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยา ในสมัยกรุงธนบุรี สมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรี ได้ทรงพระราชนิพนธ์สำหรับให้ละครหลวงเล่น ปัจจุบันมีอยู่ไม่ครบ ต่อมาในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์รัชกาลที่ 1 ได้ทรงพระราชนิพนธ์ขึ้นเพื่อรวบรวมเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ ซึ่งมีมาแต่เดิมให้ครบถ้วน สมบูรณ์ตั้งแต่ต้นจนจบ
พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย ได้ทรงพระราชนิพนธ์บทละครเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ เพื่อให้ละครหลวงเล่น โดยได้ทรงเลือกมาเป็นตอน ๆ ในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระราชนิพนธ์บทละครเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ โดยใช้ฉบับของอินเดีย (รามายณะ) มาพระราชนิพนธ์ ใช้ชื่อว่า "บ่อเกิดรามเกียรติ์"
