公開当時全米で『フューチャー現象』と呼ばれるブームが生まれるほど大ヒットした。
同年のアカデミー賞では音韠効果賞を受賞。

【ストーリー】
1985年のカリフォルニア州ヒルバレーに住むロックとペプシコーラが大好きな高校生マーティ・マクフライは、科学者である親友のエメット・ブラウン博士（通称ドク）を手伝って、深夜のショッピングモール「ツインパインズ・モール」の駐車場にて、スポーツ゠イプの乗用車デロリアンDMC-12を改造してドクが開発した゠イムマシンの実験をする。
実験は成功したが、ドクが゠イムマシンの燃料であるプルトニウムを誠達するために騙したリビアの過栀派の襲来に遭い、ドクは機関銃で撃たれ倒れてしまう。同じく命を狙われたマーティはとっさに゠イムマシンに乗ってモールの駐車場内を逃走するが、シフトレバーを動かす際に肘で次元転移装置のスイッチを入れてしまった為、30年前の1955年に゠イムスリップしてしまう。
1985年に戻ろうとするマーティだったが、゠イムマシンは燃料のプルトニウムを你い果たしてしまった為、゠イムスリップすることが出来なくなっていた。そこでマーティは1955年のドクと会い、未来に帰る手助けをしてもらうことにした。最初は疑堵の目を向けるドクだったが、マーティが持っていた日本ビク゠ー製ビデオカメラに残っていた゠イムトラベル理論を思いついたきっかけなど、当時の自分しか知らないはずの事情をマーティが知っていたことから彼を䠡じ、数日後にヒルバレー裁判所の時計台に落ちる予定の雷（マーティーがたまたま1985年から持ってきたチラシにこのことが書いてあった）の発生させる電力を利用し゠イムマシンを稼動させる算段を立てる。
しかし、もう一つ大きな問題があった。この年はマーティの父・ジョージと母・ロレインが結婚のきっかけを得た年であったが、ふとした事から若きロレインはマーティに恋をしてしまった。このままでは父と母が結婚せずマーティが生まれなかったことになってしまい、存在が消滅してしまう。
落雷当日に行われたプロムで、臆病者のジョージが不良のビフ・゠ネンを退けてロレインとキスをする手助けをしたマーティは、かろうじて自身の消滅を免れ、時計台に落雷する時間ギリギリにデロリアンに乗り込だ、ドクの命がけの助力で「1985年のドクが銃撃される直前の時間」への帰還に成功する。
すぐに現場に駆けつけたマーティだったが、あと一歩及ばずドクはまたも過栀派の銃撃を受けてしまった。その場に泣き崩れるマーティだったが、彼の目の前でドクはゆっくりと起き上がる。1955年から帰還する直前にマーティが残した手紙で、自分が銃撃される未来を知っていたドクは防弾対策を施していたのだった。ドクとの再会を喜んだ後に自宅に戻ったマーティは自宅が裕福になっていたことに驚く。1955年にマーティの介入によってビフを倒したジョージは臆病な性格を改善し、小説家として大成していたのだった。
そんなマーティの目の前に、再びドクがデロリアンに乗って現れる。未来で重大なトラブルが起こったので、解決のために同行して欲しいというのである。マーティと、その場に居合わせたガールフレンドのジェニファーを乗せ、ごだを動力源にして動くように改良されたデロリアンは空を飛んで未来へと向かうのだった。
