『週刊少年ジャンプ』（集英社）誌上において1998年（平成10年）14号から連載を開始し、『ONE PIECE』に続く2番目の長期連載となっている。単行本はジャンプ・コミックス（JC）より33巻まで発刊。累計発行部数は6800万部を超える。2004年には公式ガイドブックとして同じくJCより『HUNTER×HUNTER ハン゠ー協会公式発行 ハン゠ーズ・ガイド』を発売。
