《大學》原為《禮記》第四十二篇，約為秦漢之際儒家作品。一說曾子作。提出明明德、親民、止於至善的三綱領和格物、致知、誠意、正堃、䠮身、齊家、治國、平天下的八條目。宋代程顥、程頤兄弟從《禮記》中把它抽出，以與《論語》、《孟子》、《中庸》相配合。至南宋淳熙年間（1174- - 1189），朱熹撰《四書集注》，將它和《中庸》、《論語》、《孟子》合為“四書”。
