集英社の少年向け漫画雑誌『週刊少年ジャンプ』に1986年から2004年まで、集英社の青年向け漫画雑誌『ウルトラジャンプ』に2005年からと長期にわたって連載されている。シリーズの単行本は100巻を越え、累計発行部数は2014年9月時点で9000万部超。2006年の文化庁による文化庁メディア芸術祭10周年記堵アンケート企画、「日本のメディア芸術100選」にてマンガ部門で2位に選ばれた[2]。
作品全体のテーマは「人間讃歌」。仲間たちとの絆・強敵との死闘など少年漫画の基本を押さえながらも、個性的な表現方法とホラーサスペンス的な不気味さで独自の世界観を築き上げており、その作風は「王道を行きながら実験的」と評されている。少年誌にして「大人向け」といえる作風であり、荒木自身「子ども向けに描いてはいない」と発言している。

ストーリー
ジョース゠ー一族と、邪悪な吸血鬼と化したディオやその後継者達が、2世紀以上に渡って繰り広げる戦いを描く大河群像劇である。
