남양주충신교회

저는 상대적으로 교회수와 기독교인의 숫자가 적은 복음의 불모지 제주에서 나고 자랐습니다. 처음 상경한 저는 곳곳에 높이 솟은 종탑과 화려하게 수놓은 십자가 불빛을 보는 것만으로도 그저 신기하고 반가웠습니다. 물론 모든 교회가 제가 기대했던 것처럼 주님께서 원하시는 모습을 갖추고 있지는 않았습니다.

‘거룩한’ (聖) ‘무리’(徒)들이 모여 있다는 교회에서 간혹 세상보다 더 악한 세상을 보기도 했습니다. 교회가 안겨준 실망감에 하나님께 눈물로 부르짖었던 시간도 있었습니다. 그러나 얼마 지나지 않아 스스로는 도저히 ‘거룩할 수 없는 사람들’이 모여 있는 ‘거룩한 교회’에 대한 하나님의 지속적인 사랑을 깊이 깨닫게 되었습니다. 동시에 제가 비난하던 그들보다 오히려 제가 더 추악한 죄인임을 고백하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 하나님은 그런 저를 끌어안아 주시고 조금씩 변화시켜주셨습니다.

그랬던 제가 대학을 마치고 신학교를 졸업하여 목사가 되었습니다. 하지만 목사안수를 받은 이후에도 좀처럼 제 머릠속을 떠나지 않는 고민이 있었습니다. \'과연 21세기 한국 땅에 또 하나의 교회개척이 의미가 있을까?\' 라는 어설픈 고민이었습니다. 그러나 지금은 자신 있게 말 할 수 있습니다. 이 땅에 거룩한 하나님의 교회를 세우는 일이야 말로 가장 복된 일 가운데 하나라는 것을. 그 귀하고 복된 일에 감히 저처럼 부족한 사람이 하나님의 부름을 받았습니다. 지금 제 안에는 부름을 받은 청지기의 기쁨으로 가득합니다.

어느 선교신학자는 “교회 개척이야말로 천하에 가장 효과적인 전도전략(Church Planting is the most effective evangelistic strategy under heaven)” 이라고 했습니다. 굳이 그 분의 말을 인용하지 않더라도 오늘날 대한민국에 좋은 교회가 지속적으로 세워져야 하는 이유는 너무도 많습니다. 여전히 이 땅은 진정한 “아버지의 나라가 오기를” 갈망하고 있습니다. 사람들은 예수님께서 약속하신 영원한 생명과 풍성한 삶이 온전히 이뤄지기를 소망하고 있습니다.

우리 주변에 삶에 지쳐 눈물과 한숨으로 밤을 지새우는 분들이 여전히 많습니다. 온갖 질병과 사망의 저주로 아파하며 몸서리치는 분들도 있습니다. 정작 구원을 갈망하지만 하나님의 말씀을 제대로 들어보지 못한 분들도 많습니다. 신앙생활을 해 봤지만 말씀을 체계적으로 배우지 못하여 갈증을 느끼는 분들이 많습니다. 하나님께서 복되게 하신 가정에서 천국을 맛보기는커녕 도리어 지옥을 경험하는 분들이 많습니다.
남양주 충신교회는 이러한 여러 가지 필요에 응답하는 교회가 되기를 소망합니다.

남양주충신교회는 결코 완벽한 교회가 아닙니다. 그 교회를 담당하는 목사 역시 완전한 사람이 못 됩니다.

그러나 남양주충신교회는 지구의 한 모퉁이에서 미력하나마 하나님 나라의 확장을 위해 하나님께서 맡겨주신 거룩한 사명을 묵묵히 수행해 나가기를 소망합니다.
우리의 걸음에 약간의 비틀거림이 있을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 저는 우리의 서투른 걸음을 바로 잡아 주시는 하나님의 거룩한 손길을 믠습니다. 그러기에 선한 일을 시작하신 하나님께 모든 걸음을 맡기고 주어진 길을 뚜벅뚜벅 걸어가려 합니다.
