저는 20년 이상 교육에 종사하며, 그 동안 수많은 학생들을 가르쳐 왔습니다.
많은 학생들이 대학에 진학, 사회에 진출하여 스승의 날이면 전화를 하거나 찾아오는 제자를 보고 큰 기쁨과 함께 더 큰 책임감을 느낍니다.
우리나라는 불행하게도 입시제도가 지나치게 자주 바뀝니다.
바뀌는 정권마다 학부모님과 학생들의 부담을 덜어 주기 위해서라고 하지만 언제나 그렇듯이 별로 나아지지 않은 것 같습니다. 그 가운데서 늘 애궂은 학부모님과 학생들만 피해를 보고 있습니다. 참 안타깝습니다.
세상을 살아가는 기쁨 중에 자식이 제대로 성장하고 성공하는 것을 보는 즐거움만큼 큰 것은 흔치 않을 것입니다.
공부는 최종적으로 학생이 하는 것이지만 학부모와 교사가 삼위일체가 되었을 때 가장 교육 효과가 높다고 생각합니다. 옛날에는 가정 환경이 나빠도 성적이 좋은 학생이 많았는데, 요즘은 그것이 안 좋으면 성적이 좋지 않은 학생이 점점 더 많아지는 것 같아 가슴이 아픕니다.
문제가 있으면 해결책이 있다고 생각합니다. 상담을 해보면 모든 부모님들이 자녀 걱정을 하십니다. 자녀교육에 만족하는 부모님은 거의 없습니다. 성적걱정, 건강걱정, 친구걱정, 지나친 컴퓨터 사용, 미래에 대한 걱정... 끝이 없습니다.
제가 좋아하는 격언 중에 ‘생각을 바꾸면 행동이 바뀌고, 행동을 바꾸면 습관이 만들어지고, 습관이 만들어지면 성품이 형성되고, 성품이 형성되면, 운명이 결정난다’는 말이 있습니다. ‘인간은 자신이 정한 목표이상으로 성공할 수 없다’라는 말도 있습니다. 그래서 본인은 학생들에게 성공하려면 ‘생각을 바꾸자, ꠈ은 원대하게, 계획은 구체적으로, 실천은 확실하게 하자’라고 가르칩니다.
