자선냄비 따끈이 (Smart Charity Pot)

1891년 겨울 미국 오클랜드 부둣가에 걸린 큰 쇠솥 하나, 지나가던 사람들 하나 둘씩 걸어둔 솥에 돈을 넣기 시작했습니다. 1000여명을 태운 여객선이 미국 샌프란시스코 해안에 좌초되는 사고가 발생하였고, 바로 이것은 추운 날 굶주림에 시달리는 당시 난민들을 돕기 위한 시민들의 모금이었습니다.

구세군 여사관인 조지프 맥피(Joseph McFee) 정위가 난민들을 돕기 위해 오클랜드 부두가에 걸어둔 솥은 시민들의 따뜻한 공감과 참여를 통해 ‘자선냄비’로 새롭게 태어났습니다.

이후 자선냄비는 따뜻한 마음을 닮은 붉은색으로 옷을 갈아입고 현재 세계 127개국에서 이웃 사랑의 소중함을 일깨워 주는 상징으로 자리를 잡았습니다. 우리나라에서는 일제강점기인 1928년 흉년과 수해가 반복되어 굶주리는 사람들이 늘어가자 스웨덴 출신 구세군 조셉 바아(박준섭) 정령이 서울 명동을 비롯 20여 도심에서 자선냄비를 설치하여 성금 모금을 한 것이 최초의 시작이었습니다.

1965년부터 사용해온 한국 구세군의 낡고 찌그러진 양철 자선냄비는 상징인 ‘붉은색’과 ‘냄비’라는 공통분모를 함께 나누는 특별한 친구를 만났습니다. 2004년 휘슬러코리아는 한국 구세군과 함께 지난 160여년의 주방기구 제작 노하우와 기술력 그리고 특유의 디자인 모티브를 바탕으로 지금의 새로운 자선냄비를 만들어주었습니다. 그리고 지금 2015년까지 구세군의 친구인 휘슬러코리아는 전국의 자선냄비를 수리해 주고 제작해 주는 역할을 하고 있으며, 매해 새로운 모습의 특별한 자선냄비를 제작하여 구세군과 함께 즐거운 나눔 문화 확산에 동참하고 있습니다.
