I don\'t know if people understand why hair is such a big deal for people with naturally kinky hair. For me it\'s largely that I have just now begun to be comfortable accepting, wearing and managing\nmy kinky hair. As ridiculous as it may sound, I thought it was too difficult to wear my natural hair and that is simply not true.

From childhood a mother who has one or more girls with kinky hair has a job on her hands. I was fortunate. My mother could comb hair. Pictures of me as a kid are presentable. I have two sisters.\nMy mom did natural hair for all of us until I was about 12. Mom took at least two hours per child from beginning to end if she washed, conditioned and styled our hair. I remember wearing lots of\nponytails, press and curls and afros. The style I hated the most was the pony tail at the top of our head with the braid sticking straight up. That was a trendy style back then. Who said this was\ncute?

My mom then allowed us to get a relaxer. It\'s what a lot of the ladies were wearing at the time. We thought a relaxer would make our hair easier to manage and it did. We got relaxers right at the\ntime that we started managing our hair ourselves. It worked okay. Yet it was not until I was an adult, without a relaxer, that I realized that I didn\'t know a lot of hairstyles for my natural hair\nother than cornrows and press and curls. The desire for style variety for my kinky hair is what inspired my search for simplistic, professional natural hair styles.

The journey was interesting. Kinky hair has a texture all its own and things like scarves, hairpins, banana clips, water and conditioner become critical. For example, kinky hair actually needs\nwater and moisture. I now wet my hair almost every day. Yet, I spent years avoiding water because I didn\'t want to mess up my hair. In addition, I had to experiment. Some days were not good hair\ndays. I tried lots of styles until I found some that made sense for me.

I am so thankful that I have found a few styles that can be done quickly if I need to be somewhere. Twist-outs, wash-n-go and protective styles have been my saving grace. Several websites have\nvideo tutorials and such that help those who are managing natural hair. Thankfully lots of people are now wearing natural hair and new styles surface every day. By new styles I mean those that can be\ndone by an individual without adding extensions or weaves. It takes some looking, but the hairstyles are available and accessible. I am more comfortable now than I have ever been wearing my natural\nhair.
