osé Carlos Florêncio nasceu na casa nº. 73 da Rua do Norte, no dia 24 de julho do ano de 1908. Formou-se em Direito pela Faculdade de Direito do Recife em 1942. Ainda na infância, fundou o seu
primeiro jornal. No Externato Nossa Senhora do Carmo, juntamente com Ewandro di Carvalho, de 1915 a 1917, entre os 7 e 9 anos de idade, foi o responsável pela fundação do Jornal “O Amiguinho”, que
nos seus quadros recebia, entre outras, a colaboração de José Florêncio Neto (Machadinho) e Álvaro Lins.
Foi um dos organizadores do Clube Intermunicipal, membro da sua primeira Diretoria, e do Rotary Clube de Caruaru, do qual foi o seu primeiro diretor do protocolo. No Central Sport Clube foi orador várias vezes, oficial e secretário. Ocupou no Estado, os cargos de Inspetor de Ensino do Colégio Sagrado Coração e Promotor Público Interino de Caruaru.
Foi fiel a três coisas na vida: à Vanguarda, à política dos Pontes Vieira, especialmente ao ex- deputado federal José de Pontes Vieira, alma irmã em ideais, aspirações e boemia, e ao amor imensurável aos seus filhos e à sua terra.
De conversas, varando madrugadas, com o seu primo escritor Limeira Tejo, ficou a idéia, acalentada desde os tempos de criança, da criação de um jornal. E ele o fez em 1º de maio de 1932. Os primeiros números de Vanguarda, vendidos ao preço de vinte mil réis. Estava realizado o sonho de uma vida. Veja o que ele dizia em 1º de maio de 1936:
O Jornalista Dentro de Vanguarda fez de tudo. Até crônica social… Sob o pseudônimo de “RONALD” escrevia a crônica semanal “SUTILESAS” onde pontificavam frases como estas: “Ela é um enigma… Raramente a gente pode admirar essa garota que tem o porte elegante das lindas princesas das histórias de fadas que a gente gosta tanto de ouvir contar no tempo de criança”. Ou esta outra: “É que a garota por onda passa, seus olhos negros e mágicos, vão derramando chispas de fogo, fazendo com que a gente fique num fascínio constante de alucinação, sem saber como essa menina vivaz soube prender tanto…”
Foi polemista político. Quase sempre, ele que era mais do amor e da boemia, comprava brigas alheias por causa do PSD e é dele o trecho de uma delas: “Você arrastou um filho de Caruaru que tem feito alguma coisa por sua terra, a uma situação de luta, pois bem seria feito que esse caruaruense se deixasse emaranhar pela vileza de um forasteiro”.
O jovem José Carlos Florêncio, então com vinte anos, se inspirou em um periódico carioca para escolher o nome. O acervo material e anúncios foram adquiridos de “O Pororoca” um jornal irreverente e humorístico. Após a venda das oficinas de “O Pororoca”, O Vanguarda passou a ser impresso nas oficinas do “Jornal de Caruaru” que já não circulava mais, tempos depois José Carlos Florêncio comprou as máquinas ,assim o jornal passou a ter suas próprias oficinas.
Com o desenvolvimento do jornalismo em Caruaru, houve a necessidade de novos investimentos, José Carlos adquiriu a tipografia “A Primavera” que possuía entre os equipamentos um prelo “Jesus” que imprimia duas páginas de uma só vez,um avanço para a época.
Foi um dos organizadores do Clube Intermunicipal, membro da sua primeira Diretoria, e do Rotary Clube de Caruaru, do qual foi o seu primeiro diretor do protocolo. No Central Sport Clube foi orador várias vezes, oficial e secretário. Ocupou no Estado, os cargos de Inspetor de Ensino do Colégio Sagrado Coração e Promotor Público Interino de Caruaru.
