O acauã é uma ave falconiforme da família Falconidae.
Conhecido também como macauá, acanã, cuã, cauã, uacanã e macaguá.
No perímetro de Linhares (Espírito Santo)
e no interior do RJ, alguns moradores chamam esta ave de gavião-cova-caiau,
devido a seu chamado/apelo. Em algumas regiões é considerado uma ave de mau-agouro,
pela esdrúxula interpretação de seu canto como “Deus-chamou” ou “Deus quer um”,
indicando que a morte estaria próxima de vir a quem o escuta.
Seu canto dá origem ao seu nome “acauã” e é repetido seguidamente durante alguns segundos.
No folclore amazonense, diz-se que os gritos do acauã prenunciam a chegada de forasteiros.
Já na região do Espinhaço, em Minas Gerais, prenunciam a morte de um conhecido.

Nome Científico

Seu nome científico significa: do (grego) herpeton = cobra, serpente,
réptil; e _thëras = caçador; e do (latim) cachinnans, cahinnare = gargalhando, gargalhar, que gargalha.

Características

Mede entre 45 e 56 centímetros de comprimento (Howell e Webb, 1995, Hilty 2003)
e pesa entre 544 e 675 gramas o macho e entre 590 e 800 gramas a fêmea (Dunning, 2008).
Sua envergadura está entre 75 e 91 centímetros (Bierregaard & Kirwan, 2016).

Hábitos

Comum em bordas de florestas, capoeiras, florestas de galeria, campos com árvores e cerrados.
Vive solitário, permanecendo pousado por longos períodos a média altura em árvores isoladas,
que ofereçam boa visibilidade. Costuma cantar ao entardecer e ao amanhecer.
É comum ver esta ave em galhos de árvore secas.

The Laughing Falcon is a bird falconiforme Falconidae family.
Also known as Macauã, Acana, Cua, Cauã, uacanã and Macagua.

and within RJ, some locals call this bird hawk-pit-caiau,
because of his call / appeal. In some regions is considered an evil omen bird,
by bizarre interpretation of his song "God-called" or "God wants a"
indicating that death would be the next to come to those who hear.
Her singing gives rise to the name "Laughing Falcon" and is then repeated for a few seconds.
In Amazonian folklore, it is said that the Laughing Falcon cries herald the arrival of outsiders.
