A saíra-amarela (Tangara cayana) é uma ave passeriforme da família Thraupidae.
Também é conhecida popularmente pelos nomes saí-de-asas-verdes, saí-amarelo, saíra-cabocla,
saíra-tamanduá (Espírito Santo), capelo, sanhaço-caboclo, sanhacira (Minas Gerais),
guriatã-do-coqueiro (Rio Grande do Norte), sanhaçu-macaco (Ceará), frevicente (Pernambuco)
e sanhaço-íris ou sanhaço-ira (São Paulo).

Nome Científico

Seu nome científico significa: (ave dançarina de Caiena ou vinda de Caiena.)

Características

O macho possui uma plumagem de coloração amarelo-dourada e uma notável máscara negra,
que se estende pela garganta e passa pelo meio de toda a barriga,
a qual é diferente nas diversas subespécies, que são divididas em dois grupos: cayana e flava.
O grupo cayana é encontrado na região norte da Amazônia e os machos não possuem a máscara negra,
mas apenas uma mancha escura ao redor dos olhos.
O grupo flava é encontrado na maior parte do Brasil, da região Nordeste até a Sudeste e Centro-Oeste,
e os machos possuem a extensa máscara negra.

Alimentação

Essa saíra se alimenta de frutos e insetos como cupins e vespas.
Costuma frequentar comedouros e árvores com frutos maduros, como a aroeira-vermelha (Schinus terebinthifolia),
magnólia (Magnolia spp) e tapiá ou tanheiro (Alchornea glandulosa).

Reprodução

O ninho, em forma de taça aberta, é feito com folhas, raízes e capins e envolto por finas raízes.
Ele é colocado em ramos com folhas a cerca de 2 metros do solo, em árvores baixas e isoladas.
A postura consta normalmente de 2 ou 3 ovos. Os ovos são esbranquiçados,
azul-pálidos ou branco-pardos com manchas pardas num dos polos.
