Bullfinch:
The curió is a passerine bird in the family Thraupidae.
The curio (Sporophila angolensis) is a passerine bird in the family thraupidae. It measures about 14.5 cm, with the male being black in the upper part of the body and reddish-brown in the lower part, the inner part of the wings in white.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical humid lowland forests and highly degraded secondary forests.

Scientific name
Its scientific name means: from (Greek) spores = seed; and philos = you like it, friend; and (Latin) angolensis = referring to the country of Angola in Africa, Angolan, Angolan. ⇒ Angolan bird that likes seeds. This name is the result of an error, since this bird is unique to America.

Threats
Much sought after as a cage bird (Sick 1997). This is considered the main threat and cause of its disappearance from the most inhabited regions of the country (Machado 1998). The great hunting pressure for this species can be seen in this section where Willis & Oniki (1993) say that this activity "is incredibly efficient in eliminating a previously common species, except in places where we don't tell anyone that it exists". CEO

It is considered Critically Endangered in the State of Minas Gerais, according to the state Red List.

In the State of Parana the species is considered VULNERABLE, according to the state Red List (State Decree 11797/2018 - Annex I).

Characteristics
It measures between 10.6 and 12.4 centimeters in length and weighs between 11.4 and 14.5 grams.
The male has a black head, chest, back, wings and tail and a lower chest, belly, cristo and infracaudais of brown color. The wings have a small and characteristic white speculum.
The beak is very robust and is used to open seeds and has a grayish spot at the base of the jaw. Tarsi and blackened feet.
The female and the immature have plumage all brown.

The boll weevil (Sporophila maximiliani) is a very close relative of the bullfinch and also an excellent singer, only a little bigger and is all black and with the same white spot on the wing.

Subspecies
Currently only two subspecies recognized.

food
It basically feeds on some insects, several seeds in particular the seed of razor grass, climbing on the grass tassels or picking them on the ground.

reproduction
It makes a thin-walled, cup-shaped nest. Lay 2 greenish-white eggs with many brown spots and hatching occurs about 13 days after laying. After 30 days of birth, the chicks are ready to leave the nest. They reach maturity after one year of age. The mating period begins at the end of winter and lasts until the end of summer.

Habits
It lives alone or in pairs, usually separated from other bird species, although it can sometimes mix with flocks of Sporophila and tizius.

It is common in shrubbery, clearings with grasses, shrubs at the edges of high forests and swamps, also penetrating the forests.

Geographic distribution
It is distributed in almost all national territory, from the Amazon Region to Rio Grande do Sul, passing through states in the Midwest region. Also found in almost all South American countries, with the exception of Chile. It inhabits the Brazilian coastal regions and especially the São Paulo coast.
