Scientific name
Its scientific name means: do (Greek) korus, koruthus, koruphē = helmet, crown of the head; and spingus, spiza, spizō = chaffinch, bird; and (Latin) cucullata, cucullatus, cucullus = hooded, hooded, hooded. ⇒ Crowned chaffinch or hooded chaffinch.

Characteristics
Measuring about 13.5 centimeters in length, it is similar in size to the sparrow and weighs between 11 and 18 grams.
Its color is dark brown on the top and red on the bottom and on the head, especially in the male, which has an intense color and a red tuft with a black stripe. Both sexes have a white line surrounding the eyes. The coloration of the females is not as bright and more brownish.

Scientific name
Its scientific name means: do (Greek) zönë = with lists; striped; and thrix, trikhos = hair; e capensis = referring to the cape of good hope; ⇒ Bird with striped hair from the Cape of Good Hope.

Characteristics
Medium sized bird that measures 15 centimeters in length. It has a compact body, with wings and tail of regular sizes, slender legs and feet and a strong, conical beak. The dorsal color is gray-brown, with a gray head with two black strips that start from the base of the maxilla, going up to the nape, with a central gray part, also starting from the same base and extending to the nape.
The faces are gray in color, with two black strips on each side that go up to the neck region, one starting from the posterior corner of the eye and the other from the corner of the beak. Neck with a belted band of red-rust color that goes down to the sides of the high chest, where it meets with a black spot.
Dorsal intermediate portion of brown-gray color with coverlets, including wings with black spots and remainder of the lower brown-gray back. When the wings meet, the feathers end with a white stripe. White throat, white-gray chest and abdomen, being lighter in the central part. It has a small forelock with a striated design on the head.
