Achleitner war der Sohn des Straubinger Stadtpfarrchoralisten Innozenz Achleitner. Dieser schickte seinen Sohn sehr früh aufs örtliche Gymnasium und auf die Universität in Salzburg, um ihm ein Lehramts-Studium zu ermöglichen. Nach dem Tod des Vaters brach Achleitner sein Studium sofort ab und bereiste fast ganz Europa.
Von seiner ersten Reise entlang des Rheins und der Donau bis fast ans Schwarze Meer berichtete er in spannend geschriebenen Feuilletons mehrerer großer Zeitungen. So finanzierte er nicht nur diese Reise, sondern fand auch auf diesem Weg zur Schriftstellerei. Auf diese Weise auf ihn aufmerksam geworden, bot ihm um 1878 die Süddeutsche Presse in München den Posten als Redakteur an. Achleitner bekleidete diese Stelle, bis die SP ihr Erscheinen einstellte. Ab dann lebte er in München als freier Schriftsteller.
Als solcher bereiste er in den Sommermonaten die Bergwelt von Bayern bis in die Steiermark, wo er auch als begeisterter Jäger u.a. in den wittelbachischen und habsburgischen Jagdrevieren ein gern gesehener Gast war. Diese Erlebnisse thematisierte er in seinen Heimatromanen, besonders aber auch in seinen Jagdnovellen. 1897 verlieh ihm der Herzog von Anhalt den Titel eines Professors und drei Jahre später, 1900, den Titel eines Hofrats. Weitere drei Jahre später, 1903, wurde Achleitner durch den gleichen Landesherrn zum Geheimen Hofrat befördert. Am 29. September 1927 starb Arthur Achleitner neunundsechzigjährig in München und fand seine letzte Ruhestätte auf dem Sendlinger Friedhof.

Achleitner was the son of Straubinger Stadtpfarrchoralisten Innocent Achleitner. This sent his son very early on local high school and the University of Salzburg to allow him a magisterium studies. After his father's death Achleitner abandoned his studies and immediately traveled almost all over Europe.
From his first journey along the Rhine and the Danube to the Black Sea almost, he reported in exciting feature articles written several major newspapers. He not only financed the trip, but also found in this way to writing. Become aware of in this way to him, offering him about 1878, the Süddeutsche press in Munich at the post of editor. Achleitner held this position until the SP stopped her appearance. From then on he lived in Munich as a freelance writer.
As such, he toured in the summer months the mountains of Bavaria into Styria, where he has also an avid hunter in the wittelbachischen and Habsburg hunting grounds was a welcome guest. These experiences he focused in his homeland novels, but particularly in his hunting stories. 1897 awarded him the Duke of Anhalt the title of professor and three years later, in 1900, the title of Privy Councillor. Three years later, 1903, Achleitner was promoted by the same sovereign to the Privy Councilor. On September 29, 1927 Arthur Achleitner neunundsechzigjährig died in Munich and found his last resting place in the Sendlinger cemetery.
