O torneio deixará de ser semestral, sendo disputado entre 3 de abril e 27 de novembro.
Os classificados para a Copa Sul-Americana de 2013 serão definidos entre eliminados até a terceira fase da Copa do Brasil. Os 8 clubes eliminados até a referida fase que tenham ficado entre os melhores no Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol de 2012 serão indicados à competição sulamericana.
Caso as 16 melhores equipes da Série A não sejam suficientes para completar as oito vagas, os quatro melhores da Série B completarão as vagas. Se ainda assim não for suficiente, serão convidados os clubes rebaixados na Série A.
