Depression Test APPLICATION description
The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)* is a brief measure of symptoms of depression, based on the diagnostic criteria for Major Depressive Disorder described in DSM-IV. The PHQ-9 consists of the following 9 questions.
Please note:
1. These questions are designed to help you reflect on your situation or that of someone close to you. They will not provide a diagnosis - for that you need to see a health professional. Diagnoses of depression, or other disorders, should not be made based on PHQ-9 scores alone. High PHQ-9 scores can occur during bereavement, with a history of a Bipolar Disorder, and some physical disorders, medications or drugs can trigger symptoms of depression.
2. Total PHQ-9 scores >19 OR >1 on question 9 should be followed up with a risk assessment and provision of appropriate emergency contacts. People with these scores should be supported to stay safe. This should include providing contact details for emergency services (Police or Ambulance: ph 000), crisis services (Lifeline: ph 13 11 14), or the patient's General Practitioner if available.
