Desa Wisata Cempaka Kecamatan Bumijawa Kabupaten Tegal menyimpan cerita sejarah yang menarik untuk disimak. Berada di lereng Gunung Slamet, Desa Cempaka memiliki udara sejuk dari vegetasi alami yang
tumbuh subur seperti rimbunnya pepohonan hingga pertanian yang di kelola oleh masyarakat.
Nama Cempaka berasal dari sebuah pohon bunga cempaka yang ditanam oleh seorang wali atau penyebar agama Islam asal Cirebon bernama mbah Sanmuluk. Beliau merupakan salah satu dari para sesepuh yang turut andil dalam pembangunan Desa Cempaka. Seperti pembangunan beberapa tuk atau mata air.
Mbah Sanmuluk tak sendiri, dalam proses pembangunan sebuah mata air bernama Tuk Mudal, beliau ditemani oleh sesepuh dari beberapa desa di Kecamatan Bumijawa. Seperti mbah Mayakerti, mbah Raksandana, mbah Sutawedana, mbah Pandansari, mbah Agung, dan mbah Jigjaya.
Tuk Mudal Cempaka merupakan mata air yang dulunya sering disebut dengan nama Mudal Aya atau Tuk Cirebon. Sumber mata air alami ini dulunya digunakan oleh warga sekitar untuk keperluan sehari-hari seperti memasak, mandi, dan wudhu. Bahkan dahulu Tuk Mudal dibagi menjadi dua bagian dengan sebuah pembatas untuk pembedaan tempat bagi laki-laki dan perempuan saat mengambil wudhu.
Setiap mata air memiliki sebuah mushola atau tempat ibadah bagi umat muslim. Sehingga Tuk Mudal dahulu menjadi sebuah tempat untuk sarana bersosialisasi bagi masyarakat setempat menjelang waktu sholat fardhu. Desa Cempaka Tegal memiliki mata air dengan posisi lebih rendah dari perumahan warga, sehingga saat itu mendorong masyarakat untuk menuju tujuh mata air di bawah.
Kondisi tersebut berubah setelah masuknya Pangsimas (pengelolaan air bersih masyarakat) atau pengairan air bersih ke setiap desa dengan posisi mata air yang lebih tinggi. Dampaknya, Tuk Mudal dan enam mata air di sekitarnya tak lagi difungsikan untuk keperluan sehari-hari seiring perkembangan tersedianya air bersih yang ada di setiap rumah.
Namun dalam perjalannya, program tersebut tak serta merta melalui jalan mulus. Masyarakat Desa Cempaka harus “berebut” mata air dengan beberapa desa lain di sekitarnya, yakni Desa Gunung Agung dan Desa Jejeg.
Sebelum program tersebut berjalan pada tahun 2014 lalu, pemerintah Desa Cempaka harus membeli mata air dari Desa Jejeg dan Desa Sirampog. Desa Jejeg merupakan salah satu desa di Kecamatan Bumijawa yang lokasinya berkisar tiga kilometer di atas Desa Cempaka. Sedangkan Desa Sirampog berada di Kabupaten Brebes dengan jarak kurang lebih tujuh kilometer dari Desa Cempaka.
Pembelian mata air milik perseorangan itu pun sempat melalui proses negoisasi yang alot. Bahkan mulanya, harga tawar sebuah mata air hingga bernilai ratusan juga rupiah. Namun setelah melalui proses negosiasi yang panjang dengan persaingan ketat dengan desa lainnya, Desa Cempaka mampu membeli dua mata air tersebut.
Pemuda di wilayah Cempaka Barat berinisiatif mengembangkan wisata di sebuah bukit yang mereka beri nama Bukit Bulak Cempaka atau lebih dikenal dengan nama BBC.
Sejumlah nama seperti Nursan dan Roid memotori pembangunan spot-spot selfie agar menjadi magnet bagi para pecinta fotografi.
Tak hanya itu, BBC bukan saja menjadi tempat selfie namun pemerintah desa ingin mengembalikan Desa Cempaka sebagai sentra durian seperti dahulu kala. Keinginan tersebut diwujudkan dengan upaya penanaman 7200 pohon durian yang dibagikan kepada masyarakat sekitar BBC.
Upaya tersebut diharapkan terwujudnya area khusus yang bakal menjadi pusat wisata kebun durian.
Berbagai upaya yang telah dilakukan Pokdarwis dalam pengembangan pariwisata di Desa Cempaka tiga tahun ini membuahkan hasil yang direspon baik oleh masyarakat.
Antara lain yakni Tuk Mudal dengan tujuh mata airnya, Bukit Bulak Cempaka atau BBC, bukit di atas awan Puncak Brongkol, dan Gunung Luhur.
