Devocion a San Francisco de Asis

Llamado a la renuncia y a la negación
Enseguida, partió en busca de un sitio conveniente para establecerse. Iba cantando alegremente las alabanzas divinas por el camino real, cuando se topó con unos bandoleros que le preguntaron quién era. El respondió: "Soy el heraldo del Gran Rey". Los bandoleros le golpearon y le arrojaron en un foso cubierto de nieve. Francisco prosiguió su camino cantando las divinas alabanzas. En un monasterio obtuvo limosna y trabajo como si fuese un mendigo. Cuando llegó a Gubbio, una persona que le conocía le llevó a su casa y le regaló una túnica, un cinturón y unas sandalias de peregrino. Francisco los usó dos años, al cabo de los cuales volvió a San Damián.

Para reparar la iglesia, fue a pedir limosna en Asís, donde todos le habían conocido rico y, naturalmente, hubo de soportar las burlas y el desprecio de más de un mal intencionado. El mismo se encargó de transportar las piedras que hacían falta para reparar la iglesia y ayudó en el trabajo a los albañiles. Una vez terminadas las reparaciones en la iglesia de San Damián, Francisco emprendió un trabajo semejante en la antigua iglesia de San Pedro. Después, se trasladó a una capillita llamada Porciúncula, que pertenecía a la abadía benedictina de Monte Subasio. Probablemente el nombre de la capillita aludía al hecho de que estaba construida en una reducida parcela de tierra.

La Porciúncula se hallaba en una llanura, a unos cuatro kilómetros de Asís y, en aquella época, estaba abandonada y casi en ruinas. La tranquilidad del sitio agradó a Francisco tanto como el título de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, en cuyo honor había sido erigida la capilla.

Francisco la reparó y fijó en ella su residencia. Ahí le mostró finalmente el cielo lo que esperaba de él, el día de la fiesta de San Matías del año 1209.
En aquella época, el evangelio de la misa de la fiesta decía: "Id a predicar, diciendo: El Reino de Dios ha llegado... Dad gratuitamente lo que habéis recibido gratuitamente... No poseáis oro ... ni dos túnicas, ni sandalias, ni báculo ...He aquí que os envío como corderos en medio de los lobos..." (Mat.10 , 7-19). Estas palabras penetraron hasta lo más profundo en el corazón de Francisco y éste, aplicándolas literalmente, regaló sus sandalias, su báculo y su cinturón y se quedó solamente con la pobre túnica ceñida con un cordón. Tal fue el hábito que dio a sus hermanos un año más tarde: la túnica de lana burda de los pastores y campesinos de la región. Vestido en esa forma, empezó a exhortar a la penitencia con tal energía, que sus palabras hendían los corazones de sus oyentes.
