DIY Plastic Crafts APPLICATION description
Epoxy and polyester resins are clear, liquid forms of plastic that harden with the addition of a catalyst. Liquid plastic crafts involve embedding items into the resign to create personal and home
accessories. Metal and plastic molds are often used to provide structure to the liquid plastic designs, but you also can encase objects in glass or wood containers that remain part of the design.
Resin Jewelry
Make your own pendants and charms with liquid plastic and a metal jewelry bezel. Jewelry bezels are available in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Many have bails already attached so you can hang your designs from a length of chain or jewelry cording. To make resin jewelry, apply a strip of wide packing tape to the back side of the bezel. Bezels are open on the front and the back; the packing tape creates a wall to hold in the liquid plastic. Mix and pour a thin layer of liquid plastic inside the bezel. Then add a pressed flower, a coin, a jewel or any other small item you would like to showcase. Arrange the item in the center of the bezel and fill the bezel to the rim with liquid plastic.
Resin Tray
Create a decorative and functional resin tray with your choice of items embedded into the design. Paint the tray to coordinate with your choices, then arrange sea shells, vintage jewelry, mementos, rice paper, glass cabochons, toys and a variety of other items on the inside bottom of the tray. Once the collage arrangement suits you, glue the items to the tray using rubber cement to keep them in place as you pour the resin. Fill the bottom of the tray with liquid plastic until the tallest item in your collage is covered.
Candleholder
Decorate your home with a custom-designed candleholder made with liquid plastic and colorful glass beads, seashells, starfish or other small items. You’ll need two cylindrical glass containers, one that fits inside the other. The space between the sides of the two containers is your design platform. Fill the space with your decorative objects and then pour in the liquid plastic. You could also glue the objects to the outside of the smallest glass cylinder before fitting it inside the large glass cylinder. The inside container is the candleholder. Use votives or pillar candles that are easily replaced.
