DIYCrochetBolero APPLICATION description

Bolero jackets are inspired by the Spanish style of dress worn by Empress Eugenie of France in the mid 1800s. This very short jacket is worn open over a blouse or dress. The front edges of the jacket are usually curved, and the bottom hem falls to approximately the middle of the back. Some bolero jackets are made with beads and lace, and thus suited for fancy occasions, while other are made from denim or cotton to make a casual outfit a bit more chic and stylish.

Things You'll Need
• Six or seven skeins of yarn, one color or assorted colors
• Crochet hook
Step:
• Pick a yarn and appropriate crochet hook by checking a chart.
• Pick a crochet square or flower pattern.
• Crochet at least 40 squares, and four half-squares. Make more if you want to make a long sleeve jacket, less if you want to make a sleeveless jacket.
• Lay out the squares for the back by placing five squares across and four down. These 20 squares are the base of your back. You can add another row of five if you want the jacket to be a bit longer in the back.
• Place four squares that start only on the upper two rows of the above rows that you created. These will make your sleeves. The amount of these rows that you place will determine your sleeve length.
• For the front of the jacket, skip two rows down from where the squares for the back ended add four squares and four half squares to make the front.
• Start to sew all these squares together with a simple slip stitch. You will have a large, flat, funny shaped blanket.
• Fold it in half and try it on to make sure it fits. Add more squares if needed and then sew together the seams of the sleeves and the sides of the jacket.
• Add more squares to lengthen your sleeves, the back, or the front, as desired, and add or subtract half squares for decoration.
• You can choose to leave the bolero jacket open, add a button, which you will just slip into one of the holes in a square, or add ribbons or yarn to create a tie for the front of it.
