Eiger is a mountain peak in the Bernese Alps which is 3,970 meters above sea level. It is located on the territory of the Swiss canton of Bern. Together with the Jungfrau and Mönch peaks it forms a famous trio that rises above the surrounding landscape. Eiger was first mentioned in historical documents in 1252.
The summit is a triangular almost entirely composed of limestone pyramid faces oriented in the south north-east and south-west direction. The south-western and south-eastern faces of the pyramid are covered with glaciers with outcrops of rocks the northern face the famous Northern Wall of the Eiger which has a height difference from the base to the summit of 1800 meters at an average steepness of 75 degrees has a smaller glaciation and is an avalanche- Almost entirely covered with infiltrated ice. Due to its characteristic concavity and northern orientation the wall is strongly shaded and cold even in summer and in winter it is almost not illuminated by the sun. In addition due to the specific location and orientation Eiger is strongly influenced by the cold masses of air brought from the north. The weather in the area of the peak can deteriorate within a few hours and even at the height of summer snowfalls and large temperature changes are not uncommon.
At the foot of the northern wall of the Eiger there is a natural object Jungfrau Aletsch- Bichhorn a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Through the Eiger the Jungfrau railway passes through the tunnel. In the center of the northern wall of the railway station is operating since 1903 Eygervand. At this stop, passengers can get off the train and admire the opening from a height of 2865 meters for a few minutes. The windows and the door of this station saved life and some unfortunate climbers.
