GCB Anniversary Symposium 2016 APPLICATION description

GCB 10th Anniversary Symposium 2016 | Welcome Address
Dear Participants
Dear Guests
It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 10th Anniversary Symposium of the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (GCB) of the University of Bern. Looking back on the last ten years, it is no exaggeration to describe the development of the GCB as a «success story»: Ever since the inception of the PhD program, the number of students has constantly risen each year, now steadily approaching the magic limit of 400 PhD candidates, originating from about 40 different countries. In this anniversary year, 231 young scientists will present their research work to their peers and to a wider audience of senior colleagues.
Our traditional annual meeting is aimed at bringing together all PhD candidates currently enrolled in the GCB, together with their supervisors, their co-advisors, and their mentors. The symposium offers a showcase for the very broad spectrum of research going on within the interdisciplinary GCB, encompassing areas of the molecular life sciences, biomedical sciences, epidemiology, and biomedical engineering, and thus promotes extensive scientific exchange and networking among participants. As the largest Graduate School at the University of Bern, the GCB involves the participation of three faculties - the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Science, and the Vetsuisse Faculties Bern & Zurich, as well as a selection of affiliated institutions, including the Institute of Research in Biomedicine (IRB) in Bellinzona and the Swiss Paraplegic Centre in Nottwil.
The day will start with 30 short talks given in five parallel sessions, followed by two poster sessions comprising a total of 186 posters, and it will conclude, as a special anniversary feature, with a «GCB Slam», in which 15 PhD candidates will compete for the best compact, 4-min overview over their research projects and will involve the active participation of members of the audience. In each of these presentation formats, the PhD candidates are challenged to give evidence of their outstanding level of competence in their research field, and of their deep commitment to science.
Several highlights must be singled out: The Rector of the University of Bern will give an anniversary address, followed by the GCB Coordinator’s review of «10 Years GCB», and the «GCB Award for Best Thesis», which will again be conferred on one of our most outstanding graduates of the year 2015. We are especially honoured to welcome Prof. Dr. Piet Borst, MD,PhD, Division of Molecular Oncology, The Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, for his keynote lecture «Mammalian ABC-transporters: From multi-drug resistance to inborn errors of metabolism»; we thank Prof. Borst very warmly for his contribution to the GCB Symposium.
On this very special occasion, it is appropriate indeed to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to all GCB presidents and committee members past and present, as well as to the many supervisors and co-advisors involved in the PhD program, for their dedication and commitment to the GCB.

The GCB enjoys the continuous support of the Rector of the University of Bern and the Deans of the three involved faculties, and the generous hospitality of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as the Department of Physiology, for this year’s symposium.
We are sure that the program of the GCB 10th Anniversary Symposium 2016 will once again meet your high expectations, and perhaps also entice you to look at, listen to, and discuss topics further away from your own familiar research area. We are very much looking forward to an exciting and stimulating day - and we invite you to join us in the concluding Apéro to celebrate the first 10 years of the GCB!

For the Organization Team:

PD Dr. Marlene Wolf, Gabrielle Favre
