Handmade Lampshades Tutorial APPLICATION description

One of the best ways to change the look of a room is to purchase new lampshades.

A new lampshade can not only offer a better look for the specific lamp it is placed one, but can also improve the room's lighting by increasing or decreasing the amount of light the lamp emits. Most of the emphasis on lampshade decisions is focused on the decorative and aesthetic features they offer. Focussing on only the look of the lampshade, however, can lead to issue down the road.

Lets take a look at the details to ensure you are not wasting your valuable time when making your decision.

Measure. Measure. Measure. What may be the easier step in the process is usually the one which skipped. It is necessary to measure lampshades to make sure they will fit onto your fixture. Lampshades have three separate measurements which you will need consider when purchasing:

The top diameter.
The bottom diameter.
The side length.

You can order a custom shade, but you may be able to find a general shade size in stock that will work. You can always consult lampshade sources such as All-Lite for the measurements of a shade you are thinking about purchasing.

Materials:

You'll also want to consider what material your lampshade is made of when dealing with the amount of light you would like the lamp to produce. Lampshades come in a variety of materials such as glass, linen, burlap, porcelain, shantung, crystal, rustic weaves, translucent, metal, oiled parchments, leather, exotic and plain papers, and many other types of fabric.

Once you have the measurements and the type of material you'd like your lampshade to be made out of, now it is time to select the correct fitting.

Types of Fittings for Lampshades:

The fitting is simply how your lampshade will connect to your lamp. There are three ways in which this can be accomplished and we'll jump right into explaining them now.

The most common lampshade fitting is called the Spider. It has risers attached to the harp to resize the shade. This is a desirable fitting if you plan on using different lampshades at different times of year.

An Uno lampshade does not use the harp and cannot be resized, as it connects directly to the lamp socket. This type of shade is generally seen in smaller lamps.

A Clip-on fitting can been seen in both large and small lamps, as well as chandeliers. The fitting clips directly onto the light bulb.

Other Design & Safety Tips to Consider:

The height of the lampshade should be roughly 3/4ths of the height of the base.

You want to allow a space of at least three inches between the shade and the light bulb so the lampshade does not become a fire hazard. That said, also keep in mind that Crystal and glass lampshades require smaller bulbs.

Lampshades are very versitile. You can use them on fixtures which you may not have considered using them with. Like a chandelier, for instance. The old western style chandeliers routiney used lampshades.
