La representación del Nacimiento de Jesús
San Francisco pasó la Navidad de 1223 en Grecehio, en el valle de Rieti. Con tal ocasión, había dicho a su amigo, Juan da Vellita: "Quisiera hacer una especie de representación viviente del nacimiento de Jesús en Belén, para presenciar, por decirlo así, con los ojos del cuerpo la humildad de la Encarnación y verle recostado en el pesebre entre el buey y el asno". En efecto, el Santo construyó entonces en la ermita una especie de cueva y los campesinos de los alrededores asistieron a la misa de medianoche, en la que Francisco actuó como diácono y predicó sobre el misterio de la Natividad.
Se le atribuye haber comenzado en aquella ocasión la tradición del "belén" o "nacimiento". Nos dice Tomás Celano en su biografía del Santo: "La Encarnación era un componente clave en la espiritualidad de Francisco. Quería celebrar la Encarnación en forma especial. Quería hacer algo que ayudase a la gente a recordar al Cristo Niño y cómo nació en Belén".
San Francisco permaneció varios meses en el retiro de Grecehio, consagrado a la oración, pero ocultó celosamente a los ojos de los hombres las gracias especialísimas que Dios le comunicó en la contemplación. El hermano León, que era su secretario y confesor, afirmó que le había visto varias veces durante la oración elevarse tan alto sobre el suelo, que apenas podía alcanzarle los pies y, en ciertas ocasiones, ni siquiera eso.
