Kayamkulam is a town located in the southern border of Alappuzha district in Kerala. Kayamkulam was an important ancient maritime trading centre. The Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Plant runs by the NTPC, is located in Kayankulam.The well-known Krishnapuram Palace is situated in Kayamkulam. Many old cashew factories can also be seen in the region.
The main attractions in Kayamkulam include The Krishnapuram Palace, KPAC, NTPC Thermal Power Plant, The Central Coconut Research Station (CCRS), and Kayamkulam Lake. Recently Azhikkal beach (Aayiram Thengu) and ValiyaAzheekal beaches (Kochiyude Jetty) are also gaining popularity as tourist attraction.
Kayamkulam was also called Odanadu, Onattukara in the medieval period. Odanadu was composed of present day taluks of Mavelikkara, Karthikappally, Chengannur, Alappuzha and Karunagappally. Kandiyoor Madam in Mavelikkara was the capital and later it shifted to Eruva and Krishnapuram.
