knowonder! APPLICATION description
knowonder! promotes and encourages literacy, imagination, creativity, and reading, by providing a NEW story for every single day of every month! Now there’s no reason you can’t read with your child, every day.
Research shows that reading with your child for 20 minutes a day is the single-most important thing you can do to ensure their financial and social success in life! For example, did you know, “For every year you read with your child, [their] average lifetime earnings increase by [as much as 75%]. You make a [375% earnings increase] gift to your child from birth to age five by reading aloud, just 20 minutes a day!” (http://www.readingfoundation.org/parents.jsp)
Reading with your children creates in them a love for stories, for reading, and for learning. Reading teaches children vocabulary, which empowers them as they are better-able to express themselves. Their confidence grows and their abilities to interact socially are greatly improved. It teaches them to become good listeners, and builds their comprehension levels, as well as their ability to sit still and be quite.
Even the President of the United States recently stressed the importance of this issue when he said, “In the end, there is no program or policy that can substitute for a parent - for a mother or father who will […turn off the TV, put away the video games,] and read to their child. I speak to you not just as a President, but as a father, when I say that responsibility for our children’s education must begin at home. That is not a Democratic issue or a Republican issue. That’s an American issue.” (Speech by President Barack Obama to the Joint Session of Congress, Feb. 24, 2009.)
