Al principio de su conversión, viéndose atacado por violentas tentaciones de impureza, solía revolcarse desnudo sobre la nieve. Cierta vez en que la tentación fue todavía más violenta que de ordinario, el santo se disciplinó furiosamente; como ello no bastase para alejarla, acabó por revolcarse sobre las zarzas y los abrojos.
Su humildad no consistía simplemente en un desprecio sentimental de sí mismo, sino en la convicción de que "ante los ojos de Dios el hombre vale por lo que es y no más". Considerándose indigno del sacerdocio, Francisco sólo llegó a recibir el diaconado. Detestaba de todo corazón las singularidades. Así cuando le contaron que uno de los frailes era tan amante del silencio que sólo se confesaba por señas, respondió disgustado: "Eso no procede del espíritu de Dios sino del demonio; es una tentación y no un acto de virtud." Dios iluminaba la inteligencia de su siervo con una luz de sabiduría que no se encuentra en los libros.
