Le Coran est le livre sacre de l'islam pour les Musulmans, qui le considerent reprendre verbatim la parole de Dieu. La tradition musulmane le presente comme le premier ouvrage redige en langue arabe,
avec le caractere specifique dans l'islam d'inimitabilite dans la beaute et dans les idees.
Le Coran regroupe les paroles d'Allah, « revelations » faites au prophete, messager de l'islam Mahometpar l'archange Gabriel, suivant la tradition musulmane pour laquelle il a ete revele a Mahomet a partir de 610-612 jusqu'a sa mort en 6322.
Le Coran est parfois appele simplement al-kitab (le livre) ou adh-dhikr (le rappel). En ce sens, il est, pour les musulmans, l'expression increee de cet attribut d'Allah adressee a l'intention de toute l'humanite. Les conditions de la mise par ecrit puis la fixation canonique du texte, que la tradition fait remonter au troisieme calife, 'Uthman, fait toujours l'objet de recherches et de debats parmi les exegetes et historiens du XXIe siecle.
Le Coran est divise en chapitres appeles sourates, au nombre de 114 et debutant par la premiere appelee Al Fatiha. Ces sourates sont elles-memes composees de versets nommes ayat. Les versets sont au nombre canonique de 6 2363 pour le hafs (lecture orientale) et 6 213 pour le warch (lecture occidentale).
