The lion is called the king of the forest. It has a majestic appearance. The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the cat family. The lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. When they are born, have dark spots on their bodies. These spots fade as the cubs reach adulthood, although faint spots often may still be seen on the legs and underparts. The most common peaceful, tactile gestures are head rubbing and social licking, which have been compared with grooming in primates. Lions live in groups that are called prides. 10 to 40 lions may live in a pride. Each pride has a home area that is called its territory. Lions do not allow other carnivores(meat-eating animals) to hunt in their territory. Lions are found in Africa, India and Arabia. For the public show they are kept in iron cage. Even here, they do not lose their fearful nature. They are often dangerous. One of the most widely recognised animal symbols in human culture, the lion has been extensively depicted in sculptures and paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature.
