Living Room Painting Canvas

Of recent, there has been a renewed interest in decorating with an old idea: painted canvas rugs, also known as floor cloths. And there is a reason for this interest: they are easy to clean and maintain, can be made into any size, small or large, and the painted design can be customized to match any décor.

Originally, floor cloths were used as "crumb catchers" placed under the dining room table of 18th century homes. And, sailors would create floor cloths from worn out canvas sails to cover dirt floors.

Today, the use of canvas rugs as an affordable decorating medium allows for creating whimsy in a child's bedroom, an impressive entrance statement for a home (or hotel), an area rug, big or small to compliment or match any room.

For example: a client wanted a rug in her small but lengthy galley kitchen. Her condo interior ran along the lines of a more modern design. And because the condo was at the beach, there was the sand issue. The client, an interior decorator, quickly sketched her design idea and we made the painted canvas rug to her specifications, including the exact color match to her cupboards. The floor cloth design complimented her modern kitchen so well, another was ordered for the modern living room.

In addition to decorating, floor cloths can help protect floors.

Another client initially requested painted canvas rugs for her kitchen and entryway. After having hardwood stairs refinished, she realized her big four-footed room mate, Buddy, would quickly mark the wood with his big claws and called us back to create a floor cloth as a runner that would protect the length of the stairs. To keep the canvas rug in place, pliable putty was strategically placed and Buddy can now run up and down without leaving his marks.

Because floor cloths are easy to maintain (a damp mop will clean any surface dirt) they can be used in any area of the home. Think outside the home: outdoor dining areas, pool houses, entrances. They also make affordable decorative wall hangings.

Here's a Good Tip:

You want to place a canvas rug only on a hard surface, such as tile, cement or stone floors. Reason? If you were to use floor cloths on top of another rug, punctures from sharp shoe heels or dog nails will occur.

Many artisans offer beautiful hand painted canvas rugs. And designs run the gambit: country chic, whimsical, classic stencil, tropical and much more. Most floor cloth artists offer custom work; if your ideas can be communicated, your design can be implemented. The idea is to use your imagination, or let the artist, because, although floor cloths are functional they can also be pieces of art for your floor.
