Nome Científico

Seu nome científico significa: do (grego) onux = unha, garra; e rhunkhos = bico;
onychorhynchus = bico em forma de garra; e de swainsoni, swainsonii = homenagem ao artista,
naturalista, e coletor de espécies inglês William Swainson - (1789-1855).

Características

Mede entre 16 e 17,5 centímetros de comprimento e pesa entre 13 e 21 gramas.
A maria-leque-do-sudeste possui uma espetacular mas raramente vista crista colorida.
Esta crista é sem dúvida a característica mais marcante da plumagem desta espécie.
Embora seja geralmente mantida na posição horizontal e raramente exibida,
quando totalmente estendida forma um grande e impressionante leque e apresenta uma vívida combinação de cores,
escarlate, preto e azul no macho. Nas fêmeas a coloração vermelha da crista é substituída pela coloração alaranjada.
Sua coloração geral é uniformemente marrom fosco. A cabeça, dorso e asas são marrons.
Nas asas, apresenta poucas marcações branco amareladas nas penas coberteiras e suas rêmiges
primárias apresentam coloração enegrecida.
O uropígio e a cauda da maria-leque-do-sul apresentam uma coloração canela brilhante.
As partes inferiores são mais pálidas. A garganta apresenta uma pequena mancha esbranquiçada,
o peito e ventre são ocráceos e lisos, sem marcações. A íris é escura.
O bico escuro é relativamente longo e chato e quando aberto apresenta a vívida coloração interna amarela.
Tarsos e pés são amarelos ou alaranjados.

Hábitos

Ocorre na Mata Atlântica entre 0 e 800 metros de altitude, como substituta da maria-leque.
Usualmente encontrados em casais, acompanham bandos mistos pelos estratos baixos,
tanto na mata primária quanto na secundária.

The maria-range-of-southeast is a passerine bird in the Onychorhynchidae family.

Characteristics

It measured between 16 and 17.5 cm in length and weighs between 13 and 21 grams.
