Modern Door Design Ideas

Interior design - Adding the finishing touch to your doors and windows, the molding you choose should reflect the overall style of your home. Choose from ornate Victorian moldings to minimalist modern looks, or the clean sturdy look of the Arts & Crafts movement.

Door - Materials range from rich hardwoods to stucco to painted moldings that blend or contrast with a room's overall decor. Elements include basic trim, corner blocks, architraves and plinths ranging from ornate to spare.

Sliding doors - For a simple, modern molding look, choose matching casing for all four sides of your windows and the head and leg door casings without extra embellishment. Tapered moldings--wider on the outside edge than the inside, with traditional mitered corners offer a clean, simple look. Or, combine square casings--even thickness from the outside to inside edge, with mitered corners or simple corner blocks.

French doors - Corner blocks are popular moulding options for do-it-yourselfers, negating the need for mitered corners. Most often all window and door trim match within a room, with the possibility of extra embellishment on the entrance door. Light color woods or white paint work well with the simplicity of modern mouldings.

Front doors - For a more traditional molding look, window and door casings can be built up with more elaborate detail. Combine stool and apron window sills with built-out window and door headers. If you choose, you may even want to add decorative door plinths on the bottom of the leg door casings. The window and door trim should match the basic style of the baseboards, chair rail and crown molding throughout the room.

Door handles - Solid materials; clean, simple lines; and a sturdy appearance all combine to make Arts & Crafts door and window moldings. This style uses little fluting or adornment, and simple window sills, casings and headers made from sturdy hardwoods. Molding elements are often broad, thick and robust.

Interior doors - The elaborate look of Neoclassical doorways often incorporate such elements as cornices, decorative friezes, keystones, capitals and pilasters. These elements can be used with doors, windows or archways within the home for an elegant, ornate look. Neoclassical decorative trim can be made from wood, plaster or fiberglass.
