Modern Transom Window Design

Many homes have a low curb appeal, when someone is looking to purchase a home or rent it, the first thing you want them to say when the see the house is "wow", not "oh". A person could do many things to help a home's curb appeal. For example, clean up the yard, cut grass, even paint the outside, those things help. But there is also one other thing that can create an outstanding feature, that improves the home as soon as some one sees it, a Transom Window.

We have all seen them there on many homes, if you were to compare the outward appearance of two homes that are similar, the installation of a transom window will make the home look more expensive, and higher quality. The reason is because the higher quality homes DO have transom windows, where as the lower quality homes were built at the cheapest possible cost. This doesn't mean in the slightest that transom windows are out of range in cost, by far they are the opposite. The cost of a transom is the same as any other window, and in most cases cheaper, because there is less of an area for it to fit into, so there is less glass to purchase.

A transom window is more than just a show piece. A transom window also allows natural sun light into a home, making the area it shines upon a seemingly larger. Creating a brighter area, and making a home a more welcoming environment. With the addition of stained glass onto a transom, that room could be bathed in colors that could invigorate, calm, relax, or inspire.

Transom windows can create a lot of interest not only from outside of the home but on the inside as well.

Transom windows have been around for centuries, they allowed light into a home before electricity was in every home. There are an abundant amount of reasons to have a transom window installed in your home. They allow light into your home, they can create the feeling of a larger area, can match design elements from other parts of your home to complete the look.

Transom windows can take on many shapes. One of the more popular options today is a transom that spans across the front entrance and the sidelights. But with newer building innovations, a transom window can take on any look that the home owner might want. Many homes now have what is called a peak head transom.

With everyone becoming more and more "Green" in terms of being more independent of electricity, with this in mind many people want as much natural lighting as possible and the best way to get that in a front entrance is with a transom window. They can offer the best amount of light with the most privacy, with their height, it is nearly impossible for someone walking by to see into the home, even with a clear glass.

Also having color in your transom window can allow the light to shine through the stained glass basking your entrance with colored light creating a feeling of warmth when a person comes in, causing a relaxing, comforting atmosphere, as soon as someone walks into that room. However, adding a texture instead of a color can add sparkle to the room, making it seem a little brighter. Using a mixer of both textures and colors, can create a wonderful array of sparkle and color that can invigorate how a person is feeling.

Homebuyers want light, light and more light. So when they
walk through a home with transom windows and arched palladium windows, they fall in love.

Soon after moving in, however, the honeymoon period fades.
That transom window over the sliding doors offers a not-so-lovely view of the ceiling of the porch. And the arch over the front door can seem very plain without an expensive treatment.

Replacing the window with decorative glass would be cost-prohibitive, and even window coverings - which often must be custom made for such specialized sizes - would be pricey. What's more, a window covering could block most of the natural light the glass lets in; eliminating the very reason the windows were attractive in the first place.
