Wolves Honshū, known in Japanese as Japanese Wolf (日 本 狼) Nihon Ōkami ?, Canis lupus hodophilax), Yamainu (ヤ マ イ ヌ (豺, 犲, 山 犬) ?, "Mountain Dog"), or just Wolves (オ オ カ ミ (ミ ) Ōkami?), Is an extinct wolf subspecies in Japan. The wolf inhabits the islands of Honshū, Shikoku and Kyūshū. Honshū wolves are suspected of extinction due to rabies and human extermination. The last specimen of this wolf died in 1905 in Nara prefecture. Several Japanese wolf sightings have been reported, but the truth can not be ascertained.
