After becoming injured and losing the ability to walk, the townsfolk convince Pollyanna to continue to be glad in the face of adversity. Eleanor Hodgman Porter (1868-1920) was an accomplished writer of children's literature. A native New Englander, Porter lived in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and most of her stories were set in the region. Trained as a singer, Porter began writing late in life, publishing her first novel (THE TURN OF THE TIDE) at the age of forty. In addition to her works for children, Porter also wrote several novels for adults.
