Refusing love because you're 'not worthy'

Sometimes we put up a barrier because we have concluded that we are not 'lovable', or 'not worthy of love'. We tell ourselves, and even believe, that the barrier is there to protect the people outside, to guard against them finding out the truth of our awfulness.

When you examine this belief, it becomes clear that this concept of 'unlovableness' or 'unworthiness' isn't based on any specific concrete evidence. It is itself based on rejection. Rejection that hurt so much that it had to be 'rationalized'. And the most popular rationalization, because the alternative is unthinkable, is: "I must be unlovable". So we push people away, no matter how genuine their care for us.

It doesn't have to be this way.
