Rotering for Congress APPLICATION description
Nancy understands that while the challenges facing our nation are great, they present positive opportunities for impact on people’s lives. In Congress, she will fight for the 10th District and work to bring people together around common sense solutions that work for everyone - just as she has done throughout her career.
Nancy has been a leader in inclusive government, making sure all residents have a voice, under-served communities are valued, and that the civil rights of all are respected. She has been a strong advocate for a woman’s right to choose and for equality for the LGBT community. Nancy fought for access to quality health care for all and has been an unwavering supporter of Israel, our only democratic ally in the Middle East.
Nancy has a strong, progressive history of working on environmental, human service and community issues. Nancy has a strong record of getting things done. As progressive leader, she believes she can bring people together to build a strong future for the 10th Congressional District.
Nancy Rotering grew up in the northern suburbs and attended public schools. After earning her undergraduate degree in economics from Stanford, Nancy attended the Kellogg School of Management at
Northwestern, where she met her husband, Rob. Nancy worked in finance at General Motors before returning to Chicago to attend the University of Chicago Law School. Specializing in health care law,
Nancy practiced with McDermott Will & Emery before stepping off of the corporate ladder to raise her four sons. As they grew, so did her commitment to the community, including serving as a Cub
Scout master, Co-President of the PTO, and youth soccer coach. She continues to serve a number of civic organizations, including Lurie Children’s Hospital, JACPAC, Personal PAC, the Sierra Club and
the League of Women Voters.
Nancy’s strong, progressive history of working on environmental, human service and community issues led her to seek a position on the Highland Park City Council, where she defeated a 20-year
incumbent. In 2011, Nancy became the first woman Mayor of Highland Park. In her first term, Nancy shook up City Hall, passing a major reform of city government that resulted in increased
accountability and transparency. She balanced four budgets, maintaining the city’s Aaa credit rating while shoring up pension funds for public safety workers, and passed one of the nation’s first
local assault weapons bans. When a series of storms left Highland Park without power for days, Nancy led the fight to hold ComEd accountable. She demanded they appear before a series of public
hearings, ultimately resulting in major equipment upgrades that have significantly reduced power outages.
As a mother and product of public schools, Nancy is dedicated to ensuring our children have the best opportunities available to them. She has taken an active role in providing students with unique
educational experiences, holding mock City Council meetings at City Hall with all third graders, developing a K-8 environmental advocacy education program, appointing high school students to
positions on City Commissions and working with educators and businesses to implement a student internship program. In Congress, she will continue to stand up for excellent public schools for all of
our children and accessible post-high school education for all.
