מסכת חולין היא המסכת השלישית בסדר קדשים שבמשנה. המסכת עוסקת בדיני שחיטת בהמות שאינן קורבנות (חולין), ולכן נקראת מסכת זו בכתבי הראשונים בשם "שחיטת חולין" (להבדיל בינה לבין מסכת זבחים, שנקראת "שחיטת
קדשים").
פרקים שביעי ושמיני שבמסכת הם מהיסודיים בהלכות איסור והיתר ולכך נקראת המסכת "כלל גדול"[1].
